Pokken | Tournament

Pokkén Tournament is a love letter to both Pokémon and fighting game fans. It successfully translates the thrill of Pokémon battles into a visceral, cinematic, and technically rewarding fighter. Though it never received a sequel (as of 2026), its legacy lives on in the Nintendo Switch version, offering one of the most unique versus experiences in the genre. For anyone who ever wondered what it would feel like to truly control a Lucario or dodge a Hyper Beam in real time, Pokkén Tournament delivers.

Pokkén Tournament stands as one of the most ambitious and successful crossover titles in gaming history. Developed by Bandai Namco Entertainment—the studio behind Tekken and Soulcalibur —and published by The Pokémon Company, this arcade-turned-console fighting game reimagines the beloved creatures of the Pokémon universe as agile, powerful combatants in a head-to-head arena fighter.

Originally released in Japanese arcades in 2015 and later for the Wii U in 2016, Pokkén Tournament received a definitive enhanced port, Pokkén Tournament DX , for the Nintendo Switch in 2017. This version included all arcade updates, additional fighters, and new support sets, solidifying its place as a cult classic in the fighting game community.

While Pokkén Tournament never reached the mainstream esports heights of Street Fighter or Tekken , it cultivated a dedicated competitive community. It was featured at major events like EVO (Evolution Championship Series) and the Pokémon World Championships. The game’s accessible surface—colorful graphics, simplified special moves (one button plus direction)—masks a surprisingly deep rock-paper-scissors system: Normal Attacks beat Grabs, Grabs beat Counters, Counters beat Normal Attacks.
