Whereas LGB identities primarily concern sexual orientation (the gender(s) one is attracted to), transgender identity concerns gender identity (one’s internal sense of being male, female, both, or neither). This paper argues that the transgender community has been both a foundational pillar and a frequently marginalized subset of LGBTQ culture, and that contemporary LGBTQ culture is increasingly defined by its ability to center trans voices.
