In the late 2000s, webcams were transitioning from a pixelated business tool to a mainstream consumer device. The problem? The software bundled with most laptops (Logitech, Creative, or built-in) was universally bland. It also bridged a gap for content creators. Before FaceRig or VTube studios, YouCam allowed you to overlay your face onto a cartoon background or distort your voice (via simple pitch shifting) during a live stream. For a user in 2009, CyberLink YouCam v3.0 was essential bloatware—the first thing enthusiasts uninstalled to save disk space, but the last thing casual users wanted to lose. It made cold video calls with strangers on Omegle less awkward and turned family Christmas calls into a comedy show.
